Migraines are a horrible infliction to have. A lot of sufferers have migraines so bad that is effects their daily life. They feel the pounding come on and one little sound or peep of light makes it even worse. Many with migraines tend to vomit because the pain is so bad. Migraines are cause from the blood vessels in the brain expanding which causes the nerves around them to release certain chemicals. These chemicals cause further enlargement of the vessels which inflamed and causes severe pain. They get so bad that sufferers get blurred vision and can become disorientated. Unfortunately less than half of the people that suffer from these severe forms of headache are not diagnosed with being migraine sensitive.

Migraines are still misunderstood and it is not yet known conclusively what causes them. Many studies reveal that migraine sufferers do have an underlying illness and have a higher risk of stroke. Over 30 million people suffer from migraines with most of those inflicting the females. A lot of migraine sufferers use over the counter drugs with acetaminophen in them such as Tylenol. These are deemed perfectly safe for long term usage, however it is widely known that acetaminophen cases severe liver damage over time, and drinking alcohol only exacerbates the problem. The alternative is to use non aspirin medications such as Advil. These relieve pain by reducing inflammation. More advanced medications are Triptans. These are about 80 percent effective if they are taken before the migraine gets to "blowing up" status. They are effective in treating migraines because they narrow the arteries in the brain therefore causing the headache to abort.

Avoiding a migraine is difficult. Many researchers say they can be prevented by understanding what triggers them. Unfortunately many sufferers have the slightest idea what makes them onset. Some say caffeine, flashing lights, or other environmental things can cause them to trigger. Identifying what triggers them is the most effective way to identify and treat a migraine. Stress and a routine of good sleep is suggested. As well, possibly even a change in diet and physical activity might be necessary. Menstrual migraines are very common in women and is this is a trigger, then treatment can be easily implemented with OTC medications. It is a massive challenge to live with migraines, unfortunately there just is not enough known about them to "cure" sufferers of the infliction. Until more information is obtained, there is little that can be done accept to take preventative measures and medications that may or may not be successful.
